Company In Philippines Believes Modernization Pays

V. Lilaram Manufacturing Company, of the Philippine Islands, maker of men's briefs, has grown steadily since it was founded. Firm uses many Union Specials.

The Men's Underwear industry in the Philippine Islands has developed and expanded steadily in recent years, and was among the first to use modern, up-to-date equipment for its sewing plants.


Operator uses a Union Special Style 39500B for various overedging operations on briefs.

One such company that has grown consistently since it was started by Topandas Verhomal in January, 1961, is V. Lilaram Manufacturing Company. Actually, the firm began operations in 1958 under the name V. Lilaram & Co., making knitted athletic undershirts, sweaters and "Player" brand briefs. The company felt the future of manufacturing briefs looked bright, and soon began producing "JOCKEY" brand garments under a license agreement with Coopers, Inc., Kenosha, Wisconsin. At that time the company registered under a new firm name V. Lilaram Manufacturing Company", as manufacturer of "JOCKEY" brand briefs and other items. 

The company occupies about 6500 square feet on two floors in a modern concrete building. The firm sells its garments in the Philippines to wholesalers and retailers, through two distributors: Gurnamal & Sons and Meridian Merchandising Company. Advertising and sales promotion are handled by Grant Advertising (Philippines) Inc.

The growth and expansion of V. Lilaram Manufacturing Company is due to the fact that the company uses only the best in modern equipment for producing its garments Atkms, Kroll & Company, Inc.; Union special representative in the Philippines, helped V. Lilaram determine its needs and requirements in modern sewing machine equipment.

Some of the Union Specials used by the company are Style 35700 AK  feed-off-the-arm felling machine; style39500 B Ledger; Class 51400 machine for taping briefs; Style 52800 BP for binding legs or briefs.
