Unusual 35800 Sews Neoprene

A Union Special® distributor is converting 35800s to sew Neoprene material. The machine is called the 358–4NS Neoprene Butt Seaming Machine, and it's from City Sewing & Bag Machine Company in Dallas, TX.

The 358–4NS is specially prepared for sewing Neoprene. It features an added needle (four total) to sew two overlapping two needle bottom coverstitch stitches. The Neoprene plies are butted, and a tape is sewn on the top of the fabric, utilizing a tape guide in the presser foot. The overall stitch/seam width is 9.6mm. Bill Harris, owner of City Sewing, says the machine will sew any thickness of Neoprene material up to 8mm (5/16") and needs no adjustment when changing material thickness. Primary applications include orthopedic devices for the medical industry, and wetsuits. Harris says the machine has also been used for manufacturing butt-seamed tubular liners.

Machine description and specifications: four–needle, six–thread feed–off–the–arm bottom coverstitch machine to sew two overlapping 406 seams on abutted Neoprene material, with a tape sewn on top. Plain feed, with puller. Needle gauge: 2 x 6.4mm, offset for an overall 9.6mm seam width. Stitch length range: 2.1 – 3.6mm. Maximum speed: 4500SPM. Stitch/Seam type: 406FSe-2 inverted.

City Sewing offers the 358–4NS head only, or an entire installation with head, mount, table, motor, stand and tape reel.
