Basic Preventative Maintenance For Class LEWIS 160-20 Machines

USM's Style 160-20 machines are single-needle, single-thread chainstitch blindstitch tacking machines. They are ideal for blindstitch tacking of labels to sweaters, neckties, jackets, pants and other garment parts with no stitch showing on the "Right" side.

Style 160-20 produces single-thread chainstitch stitch type 101 and is equipped with a calibrated stitch selector to sew 6, 8, or 12 stitches per tack and automatic thread trimmer. It also has two treadles97one to lower the plunger to insert the work and the other to start the cycle.

These machines also have a stitch penetration adjustment dial so that the operator can quickly and accurately change the penetration of the needle to suit the material being sewn.

The routine maintenance of Style 160-20, as well as other sewing equipment, is important and should be performed at least every six months or 2000 operating hours.

  1. Remove the work support plate and cylinder base end cover and clean the looper, plunger and needle drive areas using a brush, rag or compressed air, Figure 1. Also check for wear on the looper point, plunger tip, needle head and cloth clamp and repair or replace as necessary.

  2. Check to make sure that the plunger moves freely up and down when the treadle is depressed and released, and that there is no shake or bind in the plunger drive and cloth clamp mechanisms, Figure 2. Note: The foot has been removed for closer viewing. It is not necessary to remove the foot for this maintenance.

  3. Remove the head cover and thoroughly clean any lint, threads or contaminants from the gears, take-ups and thread handling components Figure 3. Also check for shake, binds or wear on the gears, take-up levers, take-up drives and needle drives and repair or replace as necessary, Figures 4 & 5.
