Basic Maintenance for Class 34700
& 34800 Machines

Union Special Corporation's Class 34700 and 34800 cylinder bed sewing machines are carefully engineered to help you attach elastic, hem sleeves, top stitch collars and bind knit shirts more productively, even with new or lesser skilled operators.

These high-speed cylinder bed machines are available in dozens of styles and variations for a wide variety of sewing applications.

Routine maintenance is important to maintain the smooth, quiet operation of these machines. The following maintenance should be performed twice yearly, or every 2,000 operating hours, for peak performance.

  1. To drain the old oil, remove the plug screw located in the bottom cover, Figure 1. A magnetic plug screw is used to collect foreign material on the magnet portion of the screw. This should be cleaned at every oil change. Then replace the screw.

  2. Remove the bottom cover with its gasket, and using a clean rag, wipe away any excess oil or contaminants from the bottom cover and oil reservoir, Figure 2. Clean the magnet of any foreign material and place it back in the second oil pump chamber. Remove the filter from the right sump chamber and clean it thoroughly or replace it, then place it back in the right sump chamber, Figure 3.

    Note:
When replacing the bottom cover on Class 34700 and 34800 machines the screws should be torqued 200 in. Ibs.

  3. Remove the cloth plate, oil reservoir cover with gasket and rear chamber cover with gasket, Figure 4. Wipe excess oil or contaminants from the covers and reservoirs.

  4. Check for shake or binding in the looper drive mechanism and reset as necessary, Figure 5.

  5. Check the oil reservoir gasket for tears, cracks or dry rot and replace if necessary, then replace the oil reservoir cover and gasket.

  6. Remove the cylinder cover and the throat plate support and clean out any lint, threads or other debris from these areas, Figure 6. This can be done by using compressed air, or a small brush or rag. A build-up of lint or threads could cause excess heat or binding of the machine. Replace parts when these areas are clean.

  7. Remove the small oil filter located at the left of the machine and clean thoroughly with compressed air or small brush, Figure 7.
