Basic Maintenance for
Lewis Class 37500 & 37600 Machines
Union Special Corporation's LEWIS® Class 37500
and Class 37600 sewing machines produce a single-thread blindstitch stitch
type of 103. These machines are used for a variety of applications
including: blind stitching the bottom hem of ladies' dresses, hemming the
bottom of men's dress slacks, hemming curtains, making belt loops for
men's slacks and more.
These machines are designed to provide many years of reliable sewing. But
to achieve this level of reliability these machines, like all others, must
be properly maintained on
a regular basis. The following information covers the steps to be followed
when performing preventive maintenance on Class 37500 and Class 37600
machines.
- The sewing area should be cleaned on a
daily basis. This can be done using a brush or an air hose,
Figure 1. The operator could be part of this maintenance program, helping to clean
the machine at the end of each day.
- Of course, there are some things the
operator should not do, including working in the machine. Depending on
the amount of accumulated lint, the cylinder extension should be
removed, Figure 2, to properly clean the sewing area,
Figure 3.
- At this time it is also wise to remove
the head cover, Figure 4, and remove any lint accumulated in this area,
Figure 5. Also check for any excessive wear in the needle drive
eccentric and additional parts located in this area of the machine.
- Remove the back cover and check the
belt, making sure it is not dry or cracked or there are no teeth
missing, Figure 6. Replace a damaged belt.
