Basic Preventative Maintenance For Class 39500 Machines

Union Special Corporation's Class 39500 overedge machines are high speed, single- and double-needle sewing machines for a wide variety of applications. These machines are made in over 100 styles ranging from toe closing on pantyhose to making onion sacks.

The Class 39500 machine can also be fitted with many attachments and labor-saving work aids to make this machine even more versatile and valuable.

Routine maintenance on Class 39500 machines, and all high-speed overedgers, ensures that your machines run smoothly and quietly for many years of operation. This maintenance should be performed twice yearly or every 2,000 operating hours.

  1. To drain the old oil from the machine remove the drain plug screw located in the rear of the machine, Figure 1. Carefully tip the machine until all of the old oil is drained. Note the drain plug screw on Class 39500 machines is magnetic which helps to remove abrasive contaminants from the oil. Any contaminants on the end of the screw should be wiped clean before replacing it in the machine.

  2. Remove the bottom cover and gasket, Figure 2. Wipe the inside of machine and bottom cover clean of excess oil and residue.

  3. Before replacing the bottom cover inspect the gasket to insure there are no tears, cracks or dry rot, Figure 3. Replace it if necessary.  Also check the oil gauge float to insure that the cork is not oil soaked. If the cork is saturated with oil, improper amounts of oil may be added to the machine and oil leakage or overheating could occur. Also check the oil wick and spring making sure it is not worn or contaminated.

  4. Remove the top cover and gasket and wipe away excess oil residue with a clean rag, Figure 4.

  5. Check for shake in the upper knife driving arm and remove any excessive shake, Figure 5.

  6. Check for shake in the needle driving arm and remove any excessive shake, Figure 5.

  7. Check the upper looper for shake and remove any excessive shake, Figure 6. These parts should move smoothly with no binds but also have no shake.

  8. Before replacing the top cover check the gasket for tears, cracks, or dry rot, and replace if necessary.
