Basic Maintenance For Class 53100 Machines

The Union Special class 53100 machines are single needle zigzag 2 thread 404 stitch type machines. These machines come in various styles to do a variety of operations, such as attaching pre-made waistbands (Ro-Cap) lining to the waistbands of men's dress and casual slacks, attaching lace and trim to nightgowns, slips, panties and similar garments, and hemming panels on two way stretch foundation garments.

Routine maintenance should be performed on this machine and all machines to keep operating in tip-top condition. The following maintenance should be performed twice per year or
after 2000 operating hours.

  1. Drain old oil from the machine.

  2. Loosen and remove the feed roller from the universal joint, disconnect the clutch assembly from the clutch drive connecting rod, remove the cloth plate with clutch attached, and remove the front, end and back oil shields from the machine. This is necessary so that this area can be thoroughly cleaned.  Remove all lint, threads and other contaminants from this area using a rag, brush or compressed air. (Figure 2)

  3. Remove the oil reservoir covers and clutch drive mechanism from the machine and use a rag to remove excess oil and contaminants that could be in the oil reservoir chamber, also replace the gaskets if they are cracked, torn or have dry rot. (Figure 3)

  4. Check for left to right shake in the crankshaft and remove any excess movement, also inspect the cam drive gear for wear. The machine should run freely with no shake or binds. (Figure 4)

  5. Check for left to right shake in the feed rocker and for excessive shake in the feed mechanism. Replace any worn parts as necessary. This too should move freely without shake or binds. (Figure 5)
