Basic Preventative Maintenance For Class 56000 Machines

Union Special Corporation's Class 56000 flatbed machines come in a variety of single and multi-needle styles to do a wide variety of sewing operations.

These include the Class 56100, 56200 and 56300 single-needle machines for operations such as bag making, binding shirt cuffs, and side seaming dress slacks.

The Class 56400, 56500 and 56700 styles are two-needle machines for taping necks on T-shirts, riser seaming jeans or center plaiting shirts.

The Class 56900 is a three-needle machine for seat seaming jeans and various other three-needle sewing on work pants, jackets and similar material.

Routine maintenance should be performed on these and similar high speed flatbed machines at least twice a year or every 2000 operating hours to keep your machine in tip-top condition.

  1. Drain the old oil from the machine. To do this, remove the plug screw below the hand wheel of the machine, Figure 1. Tip the machine carefully until all of the old oil is removed.

  2. Remove the cloth plate and use compressed air, a small brush or a rag to thoroughly clean the machine of lint, threads and other debris,  Figure 2. If this build-up of lint and threads is not removed, excessive heat or binding of the machine could occur.

  3. Remove the oil reservoir covers and using a clean rag, wipe away the excessive oil and other contaminants that could be in the oil reservoir chambers, Figure 3. Also inspect the gaskets for cracks, tears or dry rot and replace as necessary.

  4. Check for left to right shake in the crankshaft and remove any excess shake. The machine should turn smoothly without binds but should have no left to right shake.

  5. Check for free movement of the connecting rods on the crankshaft, Figure 4. A small amount of left to right shake is vital to the machine running smoothly and to prevent the needle bearings from overheating.
