Basic Maintenance for Class 57800
& FS100 Machines
Union Special Corporation Class 57800
coverstitch flatbed machines come in numerous styles to do a variety of
operations including attaching cuffs to sleeves, attaching cuffs to legs
of winter underwear, attaching collarettes to knit T-shirts and
sweatshirts and miscellaneous binding operations on men's briefs,
A-shirts and more.
Routine maintenance is a must with high
speed sewing equipment to keep it operating in tip-top condition. This
maintenance should be performed at least twice a year or every 2000
operating hours.
Drain the old oil from the machine. To do
this remove the plug screw below the handwheel of the machine,
Figure 1.
Tip the machine carefully until all of the old oil is removed.
Remove the cloth plate so that you can
thoroughly clean the machine, removing lint, threads, and other foreign
material from all areas. Use of a small brush, rag or compressed
air is helpful, Figure 2.
Remove the oil reservoir covers and use a
rag to remove excess oil and other contaminants that could be in the oil
reservoir chambers, Figure 3. Also inspect the gaskets for
cracks, tears or dry rot and replace as needed.
Check for left to right shake in the
crankshaft and remove any excess movement,
Figure 4. Also check that the connecting rods have free
movement throughout their rotation around the crankshaft.
Check for left to right shake in the feed
rocker and also check for excessive shake or play in the main and
differential feed mechanism's links and levers and remove any excess
movement, Figure 5. All of the parts
should move free but without shake or bind.
Remove the head cover and remove any lint
that may be in this area, Figure 6.
This can be done using compressed air, a small brush or rag. Also check
the head cover gasket and replace it if it is cracked, torn or has dry
rot.
