Basic Maintenance for Class SP100/MOC3900 Machines

A very small cylinder, compatibility with almost any thread, large sewing capacity and high speed make the Union Special Class SP100 sewing machines extremely productive straight-needle, overedge machines.

The small cylinder makes these machines ideal for small circular operations on infants' and children's clothing. Its sewing capacity of up to 9/32" (7mm) makes it capable of handling many types and weights of garments, even the heavy
weight  fleece.

Its speed, up to 8,500 SPM, depending on the application, makes it very productive. And an optional flat cloth plate lets you turn your machine into a "flat" overedger to perform an even broader range of operations.

The routine maintenance of these machines, as well as any machine, is important to maintain the performance, dependability and quality. This maintenance should be performed at least twice
yearly or every 2,000 operating hours.

  1. Drain the old oil from the machine.  To do this, remove the plug screw, Figure 1, located on the right end of the machine, below and in front of the handwheel. Tip the machine slightly so that all of the oil drains out.

  2. Remove the oil pan from the machine. To do this, remove the four nuts located in the comers of the oil pan, Figure 2.

  3. Check the oil pan gasket, Figure 3, to insure that it is not cracked, pinched or deteriorating, and replace if necessary. Also use a clean rag to remove excess oil and any contaminants that may be found in the pan area. Replace the oil pan.
