Basic Maintenance on Union Special Class 2200

With its proven dependability and easy operation, the Class 2200 bag closing machine is an ideal choice for closing all typed and weights of filled bags made of jute, cotton, linen, paper or plastic.  It also gives you a choice of either a single thread, Chainstitch type 101 closure, or a two-thread, Chainstitch type 401 closure.

It has a direct-drive, fan-cooled electric motor, fiberglass-reinforced, break-resistant motor housing and handle, upper and lower feed, heavy-duty automatic shut-off carbon brushes, dust-proof, permanently-lubricated ball bearings, 16 foot power cord and built in chain cutter.  The Class 2200 can be used as your main machine, or as a spare when you other bag closing machines are in need of service.

As it is with all machines, maintenance is a key factor in keeping your bag closing machine running efficiently and smoothly.  The Class 2200 should be serviced regularly.  these are the steps we recommend to properly maintain this rugged machine.

  1. Inspect the power cord and plug for signs of wear, Figure1.  A damaged outer cord could mean that the wires on the inside are also damaged and shocks could occur.  Replace or repair as needed.
  2. Inspect the thread stand to see it if is bent or broken, Figure 2.  It is important that the thread comes directly off the center of the cone.  Replace or repair as needed.
  3. Clean the motor area and air slots removing dirt and other debris sing a small brush, rag or compressed air, Figure 3.
  4. Remove the thread stand and cover and thoroughly clean the upper feed lever, needle lever, and presser foot lever areas using a brush, rag, or air, Figure 4.  Also check each of these areas for wear and replace if needed.
  5. Remove the needle, throat plate and access cover and thoroughly clean the sewing area and feeding area, Figure 5.  Remove dirt and other debris using a brush, rag or compressed air.  Also inspect the feed drive, looper drive and chain cutter drive areas for wear and replace as needed.
  6. Inspect the looper, needle guard, throat plate, feed dog, upper feed dog, presser foot, tension assemblies and eyelets for wear and replace as needed, Figure 6.
  7. When all of the above areas have been thoroughly cleaned, place a few drops of oil at each of the points indicated, Figure 7.  These areas should be oiled on a daily basis if the machine is in constant use.
  8. Replace the sewing parts, access cover, top cover and thread stand.
  9. Place a new needle of the proper type and size in the needle leaver, tighten the screw against the needle and run the machine for a few minutes to help distribute the oil to the parts, Figure 8.  The machine should now be ready to thread up and sew.
  10. The above maintenance should be performed every 6 months under normal operating conditions.  However, if the machine is used under severe, or very dirty conditions the maintenance should be done more often.
