Basic Maintenance For Class 38200 SAMSON Sewing Machine

As is its namesake, Union Special Class 38200 Samson* machines are big and powerful. Yet, if not properly cared for, they will be as helpless as Samson was without his hair.

The Class 38200 machines are three-needle, long-arm, 401 stitch type chainstitch machines designed to do a variety of heavy weight sewing operations on canvas, vinyl and similar operations. With an underarm space of 40 inches to the right of the needles, it eliminates the time and effort normally required to fold and roll wide sections of material.

The Samson is equipped with a built-in puller behind the needle and is capable of speeds of up to 2200 SPM, making it ideal for sewing those large bulky materials.

To properly care for your Samson, the following steps should be taken:

  1. The left cloth plate should be removed, Figure 1, and the sewing area thoroughly cleaned of lint, dirt and contaminates by using a brush, rag or air hose.

  2. The feed bar, take-up and puller drive areas, Figure 2, should also be cleaned to make sure that these components run smoothly. At this time, also check for shake or wear in the feed rocker, main shaft and puller universal joint and repair or replace as necessary. Also place a few drops of oil on the universal joint.

  3. The head cover should be removed, Figure 3, and the lint, dirt and contaminates removed using a brush, rag or air hose. If the needle bar and presser bar are wiped clean put a few drops of oil on these areas before replacing the head cover.

  4. Once the cleaning of the machine is complete, the oiling of the various parts can begin.  Remove the left rear chamber cover, Figure 4, and check for wear in the universal joint. Replace if necessary. Put a few drops of oil on the joint before replacing the cover.
