Basic Preventative Maintenance For Class 51000 Machines

Union Special Corporation's Class 51000 machines are high throw, single-needle, multi-thread chainstitch, left hand flatbed machines.

The Style 51000 B machine includes a top and bottom feeding system for powerful, accurate seaming of multi-wall paper bags made of heavy to extra heavy weight material.

This machine is also equipped to sew a filter cord onto the bag with the special standards presser foot. Style 51000 B machines sew at speeds up to 3800 stitches per minutes at a stitch range of from 3 1/2 to 7 stitches per inch.

Routine maintenance of Style 51000 B, and any machines, is important and should be performed at least every 6 months or 2000 operating hours.

  1. Drain the old oil from the machine. To do this, remove the plug screw below and to the front of the hand wheel of the machine, Figure 1. Tip the machine carefully until all of the oil is removed.

  2. Remove the cloth plate and use a small brush, rag or compressed air to carefully clean the lint, dirt and other debris from this area, Figure 2. If lint and dirt are not removed at regular intervals, excessive heat, binding or wear could occur.

  3. Remove the oil reservoir back cover, crank chamber cover and oil reservoir top cover. Using a clean rag, carefully wipe away the excess oil and other contaminants that could be in the oil reservoir chambers, Figure 3. Also inspect the gaskets for cracks, tears or dry rot and replace as needed.

  4. Check for left to right shake in the crankshaft and remove any excess shake. As a reminder, the machine should turn smoothly without binds, but should also have no left to right shake, Figure 4. Also check for left to right shake in the feed rocker and upper feed mechanisms and remove any excess shake, Figure 5.
