Basic Maintenance For Class 54200 Machines

Union Special Corporation's Class 54200 multi-needle, high throw, flatbed machines are used throughout the industry for a wide range of functional and decorative stitching operations on heavier weight materials. Introduced in 1951, a great many Class 54200 machines have been sold over the past forty years and are still  operating reliably thanks to regular maintenance. Simple, routine maintenance is all that is needed to keep them operating efficiently for many more years of trouble free operation.

Following are the recommended steps for performing basic preventive maintenance on all Class 54200 flatbed machines.

It is important to use Union Special Spec. 175 oil having the following characteristics:

Oil Specifications
Viscosity at 100° F 90-125
Flash Point (Min.) 350°F
Color ASTM. (Max.) 1
Viscosity Index (Min.) 85
Aniline No. 175-225°F
Copper Corrosion (Max.) 1A
Neutralization No. (Max.) 0.10 M
  1. To drain the oil, remove the drain plug from the right hand  side of the machine. The plug is located below and forward of the hand wheel, Figure 1. Carefully tip the machine until all the oil is drained. Oil should be replaced every six months on machines operating eight hours or more per day.

  2. Remove the cloth plate, Figure 2, and the oil shield, Figure 3Lint should be cleaned from all parts by means of compressed air or a small brush, Figure 4. Excessive lint in this area can cause skipped stitches and may even damage the machine
